Victory: Cloner Defeat in New Jersey Initiative |
November 7, 2007
VICTORY: New Jersey Voters Reject Taxpayer Loan to Clone Scheme
In a stunning defeat, New Jersey voters soundly rejected a "Stem Cell Bond Act" ballot initiative that would have sunk $450 million in taxpayer dollars into clone and kill experiments that create and destroy human embryos. "The New Jersey taxpayer loan to clone defeat signals the beginning of the end of the embryonic stem cell hype that has diverted public money from adult stem cell cures for too long," said BDF counsel Dorinda Bordlee. This was a major defeat for pro-cloning forces and N.J. Governor Corzine who personally contributed $200,000 to a shadow group that ran radio ads and phone calls featuring Michael J. Fox.
Bioethics Defense Fund consulted with New Jersey Right to Life and the Legal Center for Defense of Life in a court challenge to the ballot referendum based on its deceptive nature in claiming that it would not fund human cloning. BDF President Nikolas T. Nikas credits press coverage of the lawsuit in raising public awareness that the initiative would in fact have allocated $450 million in tax dollars for the cloning of human embryos for the purpose of their destruction. Under the extraordinary direction of Marie Tasy, NJ Right to Life ran educational ads featuring Police Detective Steven McDonald who lost his ability to walk after being shot in the line of duty. Detective McDonald urged a No vote on the loan to clone scheme. The TV educational ad can be viewed here.
